What is the difference between a “juvenile” and an “adult” in the court system?

Children are treated differently from adults under the Pennsylvania criminal justice system unless the juvenile is accused of a crime so severe that he or she will be treated as an adult in criminal court. In the juvenile court system, minors are not found guilty of crimes. Their court appearances are called adjudication hearings. For children who are not tried as adults, their records are sealed and they are not sentenced to serve time in adult jails. On the other hand, their rights are somewhat limited. They will not have a jury of their peers.

The juvenile court system focuses on rehabilitation of the child so that he or she can become a productive member of society.
