Severe Injuries in a Motor Vehicle Accident Shows Why You Need Full Tort Auto Insurance

If you can budget the money, spending more on car insurance to improve your coverage might be the best money you ever spend if you’re involved in an accident. Full tort coverage is an investment with potentially a huge return if you’re seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident.

Driver causes two accidents and kills two

Two people were killed, and two were injured in a hit-and-run accident February, according to local news outlets. A two-vehicle wreck resulted in two deaths and two people being injured, involving an SUV and a sedan.

The SUV was heading eastbound on the road when it struck the sedan as it turned left onto the southbound highway from the westbound road. Two passengers in the sedan were killed. The driver and a third passenger suffered minor injuries.

The SUV’s driver fled the scene on foot and stole a dump truck, which flipped over a short distance away on the highway.  The driver tried to navigate a turn and lost control of the truck. He again fled on foot and was apprehended near the second crash by township police officers.

When the at-fault party has no insurance, your policy may provide you the funds you need

Motorists must have insurance to drive in Pennsylvania legally. You can buy the legal minimum coverage or spend more to purchase uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage.

If the at-fault party lacks insurance, only their assets are at risk if you sue them for injuries they caused. Likely, they may have few, if any, assets. If you’re severely injured and lack UM/UIM coverage, you may get little or no compensation for your pain, suffering, and medical bills.

An underinsured party may carry just the legal minimum coverage. If they cause your accident, the limits on their coverage may pay only for a fraction of the harm you suffer. You could pursue their assets for compensation, but that may also give you pennies on the dollar.

UM/UIM won’t cover property damage regardless of the other driver’s status. But if you purchase it, you may multiply the coverage by the number of vehicles on your policy or receive it from more than one policy that covers you. It costs more to do this, but your potential recovery could be much more. UM/UIM coverage may only cost you an additional $50 to $100.

UM/UIM covers hit-and-run accidents.

If you were in the vehicle struck in Levittown, were injured, and had UM/UIM coverage, it may benefit you. Given the driver’s criminal behavior, he may not have many assets or vehicle insurance. Often, hit-and-run perpetrators are never found. You could rely on your policy’s UM/UIM benefits to lessen the accident’s impact on your life.
